As a retiree in Texas, I receive both full teacher-pension benefits and reduced Social Security benefits. I opposed the Social Security Fairness Act but had trouble succinctly explaining to other retired teachers why the Windfall Elimination Provision was fairer to all retirees. This piece is great. I especially appreciate: “With repeal, however, most recipients will get a significantly lower rate of return on Social Security tax payments than many state and local government employees with the same lifetime earnings.” Not that it matters now, but I'll be telling my fellow Texas teachers that they are about to “collect at a higher level relative to the Social Security taxes that they paid.”
