Could not agree more; spent 3 years coming up with a better tax system that uses algebra to produce balanced budgets in non-recession years; Tax Notes published it in 2017; Congress would be forced to make the numbers work; good luck getting any traction in this all for today environment. It seems the assumption is the world is coming to an end soon, so it doesn't matter. Perhaps people in Congress know something the general public does not know. But that seems unlikely. Reasonable solutions exist with respect to Soc Sec and Medicare, but they involve significant changes and some sacrifice. The discouragement of marriage for low income people is a disgrace that produces kids without a chance, many of whom end up in prison, pushing up costs to society in numerous ways. Neither major party does anything except make matters worse. Yet no third party now has a chance. The media is at fault.

Taxes are voluntary for freemen, mandatory for slaves.

Term limits is the only real solution to the lack of focus on our problems and the corruption involved with our congress. It’s been talked about for decades. Our federal congress is one of the only public servants that DO NOT GET TERM LIMITED. The government is controlled by the money that drives these politicians to stay in power. David Day

Term limits do not cure corruption.

Excellent article, Gene. Perhaps it takes a change of mindset in Washington. Clearly, the deeply rooted defenders of the status quo buried within the bowels of a mammoth bureaucracy with the primary concern of protecting their way of life have made it extremely challenging to undertake any type of meaningful and reasonable reform. We need freethinking leadership!
