Paul Krugman has been covering this issue well. The biggest problem is that Republicans gave themselves huge tax cuts repeatedly. Nixon, Reagan, Bush 2, and Trump (multiple forms of tax cuts), so the tax on the wealthy is now much lower than the tax on everyone else. The debt demonstrates the fallacy in the logic. Those tax cuts, and the drastic cut in the IRS budget (which makes tax evasion great again) are the problem and must be reversed, but oligarchs rarely give back money and power, once seized. The debt problem cannot be resolved without significant change in governance. Democrats cannot always clean up the mess because the mess is out of control now.

Reagan came in as an apparent deficit hawk but presided over a new fiscal regime: stop financing the government with taxes on the wealthy and start financing it with money borrowed from the wealthy. In breaking the unions, the Republicans also shifted the US from paying people enough to live on to lending them enough to live on, and from providing low cost public universities e.g., to lending them college tuition. This has shifted wealth and power to the financial sector and financial asset owners. It has impoverished the middle class while extending them lots of credit for consumption. That’s my understanding of the big picture. What sustains the high debt? The interest maintains a $40 trillion mountain of money. Taxes would have destroyed money, and held back asset inflation. IMO
