Low-income households command such a small share of the nation's resources...but such a large share of tax money support one way or another?

Agreed about inflation being part of gain (or all of it), in many cases. I think we need a simpler tax system with one income tax instead of two, and a VAT (that I used to hate because you'll never get rid of it) because a VAT has low evasion and makes everyone pay tax. Have 5 middle class type deductions so the middle class and below only pay the VAT. The deductions would be $20k/person to an IRA/401(k), 25% of income for charitable, $1500/month mortgage interest, high deductible premiums and HSA for health and the federal poverty level amount. The income tax rate would be X up to $100,000 of net income and 2X thereafter. The VAT rate would be X. X balances the budget. All companies become pass-throughs, with the US sales percent being US sourced income. Wages would be non-deductible to the extent the foreign wage percent exceeds the foreign sales percent. Tax half of capital gains and 60 percent of retirement distributions. The elderly would pay more tax, but the debt mess has accumulated over their lifetimes. I've been an attorney/CPA for about 40 years, and I've dealt with the tax system all that time (including returns preparation).
